Cephalopod Intelligence

Advanced🦁 Zoology & Animal DiversityTopic 40 of 53

Summary

Octopuses and squid have large, complex nervous systems and show learning and problem solving.

In depth

Octopuses have about 500 million neurons, two-thirds in arms, can solve puzzles, use tools (coconut shells) and learn by observation. Chromatophores allow rapid camouflage. Short lifespans limit learning transfer.

Octopuses learn by observation and show play. Their nervous system is distributed. Short lives limit knowledge sharing.

Remember: they have blue blood with haemocyanin.

Cephalopods evolved large brains independently from vertebrates, with the central nervous system having about 500 million neurons in the common octopus; arms have local control, which allows semi-independent action. Octopuses learn by trial and error and observation, recognise individual humans, escape from tanks, open jars and play. Cuttlefish show signs of planning and delayed gratification.

They change colour and texture within a fraction of a second via chromatophores controlled by neurons, though they are colour-blind in a conventional sense. Their short lives (1 to 2 years for most) and lack of parental teaching make their intelligence interesting. Their nervous systems edit RNA extensively. Many countries now include cephalopods in animal welfare rules.

Example: the veined octopus carries coconut shell halves to assemble as a shelter, an example of tool use.
