Summary

Regular activity strengthens muscle, heart and bone and changes metabolism.

In depth

Heart rate, stroke volume and breathing increase; blood is redirected to muscles. Training lowers resting heart rate, increases muscle mass and strengthens bone.

Muscle blood flow increases up to 20-fold. Sweating dissipates heat. Fatigue has central and peripheral causes.

Key idea: regular exercise improves nearly all body systems.

At the onset of exercise, ATP comes first from creatine phosphate (seconds), then glycolysis (up to 1 to 2 minutes), then aerobic metabolism for prolonged efforts. VO2 max, the maximum oxygen uptake (about 35 to 40 mL/kg/min in average adults, and over 80 in elite endurance athletes), measures aerobic capacity. Oxygen debt (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption) restores creatine phosphate and clears lactate.

Heart rate increases roughly linearly with workload, and maximum is about 220 minus age (a rough estimate). Exercise benefits include lower risk of heart disease, diabetes, some cancers, depression and dementia. Overtraining and injury are risks, and heat illness occurs when sweating cannot keep up. Fluid and electrolyte balance matter.

Example: lactate is not the cause of next-day muscle soreness; that is from micro-damage.
