Industrial Fermentation

Beginner🧪 Biotechnology & GenomicsTopic 13 of 56

Summary

Large bioreactors use microbes to produce antibiotics, enzymes, foods and fuels.

In depth

Fermenters (bioreactors) control temperature, pH, oxygen and mixing. Products: antibiotics (penicillin from Penicillium), citric acid (Aspergillus), enzymes (amylase, proteases), amino acids. Batch, fed-batch and continuous modes.

Process steps: media preparation, sterilisation, inoculation, fermentation with monitoring, downstream processing (separation, purification). Strain improvement by mutagenesis or engineering raises yields.

Remember: contamination control is critical.

Industrial fermentation grows microbes or cells in controlled bioreactors to make useful products. Conditions such as temperature, pH, oxygen, agitation and nutrient feed are monitored; processes can be batch, fed-batch or continuous.

Products include antibiotics (penicillin from Penicillium), organic acids, amino acids, enzymes, vaccines, biofuels, vitamins and recombinant proteins. After growth, downstream processing separates and purifies the product, often the costliest step. Scale-up from flask to many-thousand-litre tanks is a major challenge.

Example: citric acid made by Aspergillus niger is used in food and cleaning.

Remember: fermentation in industry may be aerobic, not only anaerobic.
