Neurulation

Intermediate🥚 Developmental BiologyTopic 22 of 54

Summary

Formation of the neural tube from ectoderm, the precursor of the brain and spinal cord.

In depth

The neural plate folds, forming neural folds that fuse into the tube along the dorsal midline; failure at the anterior or posterior end causes anencephaly or spina bifida. Closure occurs around weeks 3 to 4, often before pregnancy is known.

Primary neurulation forms the tube from the neural plate; secondary neurulation forms the tail end by cavitation. Neural crest cells leave the tube edges. Closure defects are common birth defects.

Key idea: the neural tube becomes the brain at the front and the spinal cord behind.

Neurulation forms the neural tube, precursor of the brain and spinal cord. Signals from the underlying notochord thicken the dorsal ectoderm into the neural plate; its edges rise into neural folds, which meet and fuse at the dorsal midline.

In humans, closure begins in the middle and proceeds toward both ends (anterior and posterior neuropores) by about week 4. Failure causes neural tube defects: spina bifida (posterior) or anencephaly (anterior). Folic acid supplementation before and during early pregnancy reduces risk by up to 70 percent.

Example: neural crest cells delaminate from the tops of the folds.

Frequently asked questions

What is Neurulation?

Formation of the neural tube from ectoderm, the precursor of the brain and spinal cord.

Which area of biology covers Neurulation, and how advanced is it?

Neurulation is one of the 54 topics in Developmental Biology. It is rated Intermediate, so it suits learners who already know the core vocabulary. Related topics in this area include Fetal Development, Organogenesis, Gastrulation.

Why does Neurulation matter?

It happens before many people know they are pregnant.

Can you give an example of Neurulation?

Folic acid supplements reduce risk by about 70 percent.

What should I learn before Neurulation?

Work through the Beginner topics in Developmental Biology first, such as Fertilisation, Zygote, Embryo, then return to Neurulation. Intermediate topics assume the Beginner vocabulary.

What topics are related to Neurulation?

The closest topics to Neurulation are Fetal Development, Organogenesis, Gastrulation, Hedgehog Signalling. Comparing them side by side is a good way to see how the ideas connect.

How can I check that I understand Neurulation?

Read the summary and the in-depth section, then use the quick check on the interactive lesson for Neurulation. To practise the whole of Developmental Biology, use the Developmental Biology quiz.

How is Neurulation different from Fetal Development?

Neurulation: Formation of the neural tube from ectoderm, the precursor of the brain and spinal cord. Fetal Development: In humans the embryo becomes a fetus after eight weeks, growing until birth around nine months. Read both side by side and note what each one explains.

How should I study Neurulation step by step?

First, read the summary and write the definition in your own words. Second, read the in-depth section and note any example. Third, compare it with Fetal Development and explain the difference aloud. Finally, take the Developmental Biology quiz and come back to this page for any question you miss.
