Oxygen Debt and Recovery

Advanced⚡ Metabolism & BioenergeticsTopic 48 of 53

Summary

Extra oxygen consumption after exercise restores ATP and phosphocreatine and clears lactate.

In depth

EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption) restores phosphocreatine, oxygen stores, clears lactate and reduces elevated temperature and hormone levels.

Lactate clearance contributes. Elevated temperature, hormones and heart rate increase oxygen demand after exercise.

Remember: oxygen debt is an outdated term; EPOC is preferred.

After intense exercise, oxygen consumption stays above resting levels for some time, the excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), a better term than oxygen debt. Extra oxygen is used to replenish phosphocreatine and ATP, restore oxygen to myoglobin and blood, clear lactate (about 80 percent oxidised or converted to glucose in the liver) and support raised temperature, heart rate and hormones.

Fast phase lasts a few minutes, slow phase may last hours after hard exercise. Breathing stays heavy during recovery. Fitness training reduces how much lactate is made at a given work rate and improves clearance.

Example: panting after a sprint.

Common mistake: lactate does not cause delayed muscle soreness; that is caused by microscopic damage and inflammation.

Frequently asked questions

What is Oxygen Debt and Recovery?

Extra oxygen consumption after exercise restores ATP and phosphocreatine and clears lactate.

Which area of biology covers Oxygen Debt and Recovery, and how advanced is it?

Oxygen Debt and Recovery is one of the 53 topics in Metabolism & Bioenergetics. It is rated Advanced, so it suits learners who want specialist depth. Related topics in this area include Cori Cycle, Lactic Acid Fermentation, Bioenergetics of Muscle.

Can you give an example of Oxygen Debt and Recovery?

Heavy breathing after sprinting reflects this repayment.

What should I learn before Oxygen Debt and Recovery?

Work through the Beginner topics in Metabolism & Bioenergetics first, such as Metabolism, Anabolism and Catabolism, ATP, then return to Oxygen Debt and Recovery. Advanced topics assume the Intermediate vocabulary.

What topics are related to Oxygen Debt and Recovery?

How is Oxygen Debt and Recovery different from Cori Cycle?

Oxygen Debt and Recovery: Extra oxygen consumption after exercise restores ATP and phosphocreatine and clears lactate. Cori Cycle: Lactate from muscle is converted to glucose in the liver and returned, costing net ATP. Read both side by side and note what each one explains.

What is a common mistake about Oxygen Debt and Recovery?

Lactate does not cause delayed muscle soreness; that is caused by microscopic damage and inflammation.

How should I study Oxygen Debt and Recovery step by step?

First, read the summary and write the definition in your own words. Second, read the in-depth section and note any example. Third, compare it with Cori Cycle and explain the difference aloud. Finally, take the Metabolism & Bioenergetics quiz and come back to this page for any question you miss.
