Planetary Boundaries

Summary

A framework of Earth-system limits, like biodiversity loss and nitrogen flow, within which humanity can thrive.

In depth

Rockström et al. identified nine: climate change, biosphere integrity, land-system change, freshwater use, biogeochemical flows, ocean acidification, atmospheric aerosols, stratospheric ozone and novel entities. Several have already been transgressed.

Boundaries define a safe operating space. Biodiversity loss and nutrient flows are well beyond limits. The concept has been applied at regional scales.

Remember: the boundaries are interlinked.

The planetary boundaries framework, proposed by Johan Rockstrom and colleagues in 2009, defines nine Earth-system processes with limits within which humanity can operate safely: climate change, biosphere integrity, land-system change, freshwater use, biogeochemical flows (nitrogen and phosphorus), ocean acidification, atmospheric aerosols, stratospheric ozone and novel entities such as chemicals and plastics.

Crossing a boundary raises the risk of abrupt, irreversible change. A 2023 assessment found six of nine boundaries transgressed, including climate, biosphere integrity, land use, freshwater, nutrient flows and novel entities, while ozone is recovering. The model is paired with social foundations in the doughnut economy.

Key idea: it offers a safe operating space.

Frequently asked questions

What is Planetary Boundaries?

A framework of Earth-system limits, like biodiversity loss and nitrogen flow, within which humanity can thrive.

Which area of biology covers Planetary Boundaries, and how advanced is it?

Planetary Boundaries is one of the 54 topics in Marine & Environmental Biology. It is rated Advanced, so it suits learners who want specialist depth. Related topics in this area include Thermohaline Circulation, Life Cycle Assessment, Ecosystem Tipping Points.

Can you give an example of Planetary Boundaries?

Nitrogen and phosphorus flows greatly exceed the safe limit.

What should I learn before Planetary Boundaries?

Work through the Beginner topics in Marine & Environmental Biology first, such as Oceans, Ocean Zones, Plankton, then return to Planetary Boundaries. Advanced topics assume the Intermediate vocabulary.

What topics are related to Planetary Boundaries?

The closest topics to Planetary Boundaries are Thermohaline Circulation, Life Cycle Assessment, Ecosystem Tipping Points, Climate Feedback Loops. Comparing them side by side is a good way to see how the ideas connect.

How is Planetary Boundaries different from Thermohaline Circulation?

Planetary Boundaries: A framework of Earth-system limits, like biodiversity loss and nitrogen flow, within which humanity can thrive. Thermohaline Circulation: A global ocean conveyor driven by differences in temperature and salinity that distributes heat. Read both side by side and note what each one explains.

How should I study Planetary Boundaries step by step?

First, read the summary and write the definition in your own words. Second, read the in-depth section and note any example. Third, compare it with Thermohaline Circulation and explain the difference aloud. Finally, take the Marine & Environmental Biology quiz and come back to this page for any question you miss.
