Puberty

Summary

The stage when sex hormones trigger sexual maturation and reproductive capability.

In depth

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone pulses increase, FSH and LH rise, and gonads secrete sex hormones. Changes: breast development, testicular growth, growth spurt, body hair, voice change. Starts at about 8 to 13 in girls and 9 to 14 in boys.

Puberty is influenced by genes, nutrition and environment. Secondary sexual characteristics develop. Emotional and social changes accompany it.

Example: precocious puberty occurs before age 8 in girls.

Puberty is the transition to reproductive maturity, usually between ages 8 and 14 in girls and 9 and 15 in boys. The hypothalamus increases pulsatile GnRH release, causing the pituitary to secrete LH and FSH, which stimulate the gonads to produce sex hormones.

In girls, oestrogen drives breast development, widening hips, and menstruation (menarche); in boys, testosterone causes voice deepening, facial hair, muscle growth and sperm production. Both undergo a growth spurt and pubic hair growth from adrenal androgens. Timing is influenced by genes, nutrition, body fat (leptin), and environment.

Example: precocious puberty occurs when it begins unusually early.

Key idea: puberty is triggered by a change in brain signalling, not by the gonads themselves.
